Avalanche warning issued

Srinagar: A medium danger avalanche warning was Wednesday issued for some snow-bound areas of Kashmir Valley.
The avalanche warning has been issued for snowbound areas of Chowkibal and Tangdhar areas (Kupwara district) by the Jammu and Kashmir State Disaster Management Authority on the basis of information provided by SASE, an official spokesman said.
The warning is valid for the next 24 hours.
“People living in these areas have been advised to take precautionary measures,” he added.
Snow avalanches are common in higher reaches of Kashmir after winter months due to fresh downpour or melting of snow.
Meanwhile, Gulmarg and other heights in the Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall Wednesday morning while plains, including summer capital Srinagar were lashed by intermittent rains with icy winds sweeping the region.
Besides Khilanmarg, Kongdori and Affarwat and other upper reaches of Gulmarg sector, Keran, Karnah, Tangdhar, Machil, Neeru, Sadhna and Razdan also received fresh snowfall.
Snowfall was also reported from Sheshnag, Mahaguns, Pisso top, Panjterni , Chandanwari  and other higher reaches of south Kashmir.
The Metrological Department has predicted light rain and snowfall at isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday , adding that the weather will remain dry thereafter  till March 9.
