Natrang celebrates World No Tobacco Day with cartoon exhibition

JAMMU: Natrang, the premier cultural institution of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, marked World No Tobacco Day by organizing a thought-provoking exhibition of cartoons aimed at creating awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. The event was held as part of Natrang’s continued commitment towards social responsibility and public awareness initiatives.
The exhibition was inaugurated by renowned theatre personality and Padma Shri awardee Balwant Thakur, Director Natrang, in the presence of eminent cartoonist Chander Shekhar, Vice President Natrang Subash Jamwal, and noted artist Neeraj Kant, along with a large number of art lovers, students, and members of civil society.
The exhibition showcased a series of powerful and creatively designed cartoons depicting the devastating health, social, and economic consequences of tobacco addiction. Through satire, symbolism, and visual storytelling, the artworks highlighted the alarming impact of tobacco use on individuals, families, and society at large. The cartoons effectively conveyed anti-tobacco messages, encouraging viewers to reflect on the dangers associated with smoking and other forms of tobacco consumption.
Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri Balwant Thakur appreciated the creative excellence and social commitment reflected in the works of cartoonist Chander Shekhar. He emphasized that cartoons possess a unique communicative power capable of transcending linguistic and cultural barriers. “A well-crafted cartoon can communicate a message more effectively than lengthy speeches or written texts. It provokes thought, stimulates discussion, and leaves a lasting impact on the minds of viewers,” he remarked.
Balwant Thakur also spoke in detail about the significance of World No Tobacco Day, observed globally to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use and to encourage policies that reduce tobacco consumption. He highlighted Natrang’s consistent efforts to address important social issues through creative and cultural interventions. He stated that art and culture can play a vital role in sensitizing the public, especially the younger generation, towards health-related concerns and responsible lifestyle choices.
The visitors highly appreciated the exhibition and its meaningful message. The event served as a strong reminder of the collective responsibility of society in combating the tobacco menace and promoting a healthier and tobacco-free future.
