Kashmir’s Strawberries: A Nutritional Powerhouse With A Growing Promise

Must read

Harvested in just 10–15 days in May, strawberries offer more Vitamin C than an orange and multiple health benefits. Market prices range from Rs 40–140 per container. New farming techniques and infrastructure improvements are helping farmers boost production despite weather uncertainties.

Strawberries are among the first fruits harvested in Kashmir, and have become an important part of the region’s horticulture. With their pleasing red colour, sweet taste, and ever-growing popularity in markets, strawberries have become a lucrative choice for farmers. The cultivation of strawberries has increased in many parts of Kashmir through favourable weather conditions and due to government assistance. The harvesting time for strawberries is from mid-May to early June; however, the picking time is just about 10-15 days in May.

Cultivation & Planting Process

Strawberry cultivation takes place in September and October by planting runners or crowns in properly made raised beds. Healthy saplings are carefully selected for better growth and productivity. The mild climate of Kashmir makes it a favourable place for proper root growth during winter, which will result in healthy blooming and fruiting in spring.

Harvesting Pattern

Harvesting strawberries requires great care because the fruit is soft and highly delicate. Farmers usually pick ripe strawberries during evening hours so they can be transported to markets early the next morning while still fresh. Since the fruit has a very short shelf life, daily harvesting becomes necessary during the peak season.

Market Value

Strawberries provide good market returns to farmers, especially during the initial harvesting days when demand remains high. Depending on the size, freshness, and quality of the berries, the market price generally ranges between Rs 40 and Rs 140 per container. Freshly harvested strawberries often receive better prices due to their taste and appearance.

Major Strawberry Growing Regions In Kashmir

Gasoo-Khimber in Srinagar is widely known as one of the major strawberry-producing areas of Kashmir. The region is famous for producing large-sized and high-quality berries that are supplied to various markets across the valley. Favourable soil and climatic conditions make the area suitable for commercial strawberry farming.

Tangmarg& Other Areas

Apart from Srinagar, strawberry cultivation is also practised in Tangmarg and several areas of Central and South Kashmir. These regions experience moderate temperatures and suitable moisture conditions that support healthy plant growth. In recent years, more farmers from different districts have shown interest in strawberry farming because of its increasing economic value.

Challenges Faced By Strawberry Farmers

Uncertain Weather Conditions: Unpredictable weather is one of the major problems that strawberry farmers face. There may be rain from April to May, which destroys flowers and mature fruits. Another issue here is extreme variations in weather conditions and even frosts.

Short Shelf Life: Strawberries are highly perishable fruits and generally remain fresh for only 24 to 48 hours after harvesting. Because of this short shelf life, farmers must ensure immediate transportation and quick sale in local markets. Any delay in transportation can lead to spoilage and financial losses.

Market Dependency and Transport: The Farmers have to be able to transport their strawberries to the market through a properly connected network of roads and efficient transportation. The strawberries tend to bruise easily and thus should be transported well and packed appropriately.

Health & Nutritional Benefits Of Strawberries

Rich Source of Vitamin C: Strawberries are a very nutritious fruit that is also rich in Vitamin C. A single cup of strawberries contains about 90 mg of Vitamin C, which is even higher than that found in an orange. The benefits of this vitamin include protecting the body against infections.

Heart Health Benefits: The fruit contains potassium and anthocyanin antioxidants that help maintain heart health. Regular consumption of strawberries may help lower blood pressure, reduce bad LDL cholesterol levels, and improve blood vessel functioning.

Blood Sugar Management: Despite their naturally sweet taste, strawberries have a low glycemic index of around 40. This helps slow down sugar absorption and improves insulin sensitivity, making them comparatively safer for blood sugar management.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Strawberries are rich in antioxidants that help fight oxidative stress within the body. Their anti-inflammatory properties may help reduce chronic inflammation and support overall cellular health.

Digestive & Weight Support: The fruit is low in calories and rich in dietary fibre, making it beneficial for digestion and weight management. A cup of strawberries contains fewer than 50 calories while helping promote satiety and gut health.

Government Support For Strawberry Farmers

The Department of Horticulture of Jammu & Kashmir has been promoting strawberry cultivation as an economically valuable agricultural product. This aim is to help farmers increase their income through advanced and commercially feasible methods of cultivation.

To assist farmers, the government has been providing financial aid for increasing the area under cultivation and plantations.

As per the J&K UT Capex schemes, farmers are provided up to 50 per cent subsidies on machinery related to agriculture, borewells for irrigation purposes, and bird netting facilities.

For better yield and quality, horticulture experts recommend maintaining proper plant spacing. 45,000 saplings should be planted per kanal of land in order to get better production from the crops.

High-Yield Strawberry Varieties In Kashmir

Research conducted by SKUAST-Kashmir has confirmed that several exotic and hybrid strawberry varieties perform successfully under Kashmir’s temperate climatic conditions.

Sweet Charlie is among the most popular commercial strawberry varieties cultivated in India. It ripens early and produces soft, sweet, and large berries. However, due to its shorter shelf life, the fruit requires quick transportation to markets.

Camarosa is an exotic cultivar known for its strong plant vigour and firm berry structure. The berries are comparatively more resistant to handling damage, making this variety suitable for transportation and commercial sale.

The Majestic variety is known for its taller plant growth and strong vegetative performance under Kashmir conditions. It has shown promising results in temperate climate testing within the valley.

Other Successful Cultivars

Other strawberry varieties successfully tested in Kashmir include Anthea, Fiana, Confitura, Red Cross, and Missionary. These cultivars are being explored for better adaptability, yield, and fruit quality.

Plastic Mulching Techniques In Strawberry Farming

Protection Against Moisture and Temperature: In Kashmir, many farmers use black polyethyene sheets in order to retain soil moisture as well as root temperature in winters.

Weed Management: Plastic mulching blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, naturally suppressing weed growth. This avoids unnecessary labour as well as the use of any chemicals.

Prevention of Rotting and Fruit Quality: Due to the sensitivity of strawberries, they must be kept out of the soil to prevent staining from the dirt and rotting of the fruit. Plastic mulches improve their aesthetic value and quality.

Use of Low Tunnels: Many farmers also combine plastic mulch with low tunnel structures to protect flowers and fruits from sudden rainfall, frost, and cold winds during early spring and April weather fluctuations.

Strawberry farming is a significant practice in Kashmir owing to the commercial and nutritional importance of the fruit, along with their growing demand in the markets. Due to the favourable weather, government support, and modern cultivation techniques, strawberries have gained popularity among local farmers. Although some difficulties, such as the uncertain nature of the weather and the perishable nature of the harvest, cannot be overlooked, the fact that new farming techniques and infrastructure improvements are assisting the farmers in boosting production remains undeniable.
