Hajin: The Social Welfare Department Bandipora on Monday organised an awareness programme on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007 at Town Hall MC Hajin.
The special session aimed to sensitise people about the legal rights and welfare provisions available to senior citizens under the Act.
Speaking on the occasion, Advocate Tasleema Jan highlighted the key provisions of the Act and said that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens (MWPSC) Act 2007 provides a legal framework to ensure the protection and well-being of elderly citizens.
She said the Act makes it legally obligatory for children and specified relatives to provide maintenance to senior citizens, including parents, so that their basic needs are met. She also informed the gathering that the Act provides for a monthly maintenance allowance for eligible senior citizens.
Tehsil Social Welfare Officer (TSO) Sumbal, Fayaz Ahmad Lone, while addressing the gathering, said that elders have devoted their lives to building families, communities and the nation.
“The roots of our society lie in the sacrifices and efforts of our elders. It is the responsibility of the younger generation to respect them and ensure that their dignity and welfare are protected,” he said.
He further said that such awareness programmes are being organised to educate people about the rights and welfare measures available for senior citizens.
The programme was attended by senior citizens, officials of the Social Welfare Department and other participants.
On the occasion, a nukkad natak was also presented by Reshi Cultural Forum to raise awareness about welfare schemes for elderly persons.
