TRIBUTE – Mohammad Ashraf: A Sailor Of Humanity

Must read

Mohammad. Ashraf navigated not just roads but hearts, becoming an extraordinary hero in ordinary circumstances

I am writing this tribute in the capacity of a regular passenger from Doursa Lolab to Kupwara and vice versa. Mohammad Ashraf’s sudden departure on April 2, 2025, left a void filled by a sea of mourners in his village at Walkul Lolab Kupwara.

Mohammad Ashraf navigated not just roads but hearts, becoming an extraordinary hero in ordinary circumstances. His departure left a profound void, yet his legacy continues to inspire. This is the story of a humble driver whose compassion and service created ripples that continue to touch shores far beyond his lifetime.

Born into modest circumstances, Mohammad Ashraf embraced life’s challenges with remarkable courage and determination. Where others might have seen limitations, he perceived opportunities to grow and serve. His early years, though not very privileged, instilled in him values that would later define his character and impact.

Finding his calling behind the wheel, Ashraf transformed what many would consider an ordinary profession into an extraordinary mission. For him, each journey represented more than transportation—it was an opportunity to connect with people, understand their struggles, and offer assistance beyond his work. Over time, he became a pillar of his community, weaving his daily work into a tapestry of compassion that extended well beyond the confines of his vehicle. As a regular passenger, I always found him wearing a broad smile on his face while navigating the tough roads of Lolab and making his passengers feel comfortable with humour, love and laughter.

Ashraf consistently prioritized community needs before personal gain. Whether it was offering free rides to the elderly, delivering medicine to the homebound during harsh weather, or organizing community events, he embodied the principle that true fulfilment comes from giving rather than receiving. His spirit of serving while driving in this far-flung area during the night, mid-night and in the wee hours of the morning without worrying about him amidst tough winters, harsh weather, and snow-bound roads or unforeseen circumstances will be historicized.

Apart from his efforts to earn his livelihood, Ashraf dedicated countless hours to local causes. He was often the first to arrive and last to leave at community calls and emergency response endeavours. His ability to coordinate and inspire action made him invaluable during community crises, from unwanted episodes to personal emergencies affecting the entire area.

What distinguished Ashraf most was his boundless empathy. He possessed a rare ability to feel others’ struggles as his own, creating ripples of compassion throughout his community. Whether consoling a grieving family, mentoring troubled youth, or simply lending an attentive ear to the lonely, his emotional intelligence translated into meaningful support.

Ashraf found nobility in simple acts of kindness that changed lives. From helping elderly passengers with picking and dropping to staying late to drive someone to an emergency hospital, his everyday heroism profoundly impacted individual lives.

He directly impacted countless individuals through personal assistance, from emergency transportation to lending a helping hand to the vulnerable. He also dedicated around two decades to the community, consistently showing up when and where he was needed most. At his funeral, thousands and thousands gathered to honour his memory stands as a testimony to his profound impact across all walks of life in the community.

Ashraf was a constant in times of uncertainty, always present when needed—just a call away. People knew that they could count on him regardless of the hour or circumstance, creating a foundation of trust that strengthened his bond with the local populous.

Throughout his life, Ashraf upheld the highest moral principles in all his interactions. His word was his bond, and his actions consistently aligned with his values, earning him deep respect across all segments of the community. His genuine kindness melted barriers between people of different backgrounds. Ashraf’s smile and greeting while boarding his sumo always created an atmosphere of welcome that transformed strangers into friends. Ashraf inspired a new generation to embrace community service regardless of their profession. His spirit lives on, with many citing his example as an angel in the form of a driver.

Though Mohammad Ashraf departed at an early age, however, his spirit of humanity sails on. In reflecting on Ashraf’s life, we find a profound lesson in how greatness is measured not by profession, fame or fortune, but by lives touched and hearts changed. His was a life well-lived—not because it spanned many decades, but because each day was infused with purpose and compassion.

As a community hero, Ashraf found greatness in serving others without expectation of return. His selflessness reminds us that extraordinary impact often comes from ordinary people who choose to live with extraordinary kindness. His example stands as an eternal inspiration, challenging each of us to lift up our neighbours and strengthen our community bonds.

The true measure of Mohammad Ashraf’s impact continues to unfold as those he touched carry forward his legacy of service, compassion, and unwavering humanity. I saw him for the last time on Eid day while offering Eid prayers, as he lovefully greeted me and we promised to meet in a couple of days again in his sumo. Of course, his sumo may ply the same route, however, dear Ashraf will not. Indeed, Ashraf will be missed by everyone.

May Allah grant him the highest place in paradise!
