The increasing tally of road accidents, especially in the area of Kashmir, is caused by rash driving and haste. Tragic accidents occur frequently and lead to enormous loss of precious lives. There may be various causes for these kinds of accidents, but the most common cause is rash driving and hurry.
The tragic accident in Ganderbal, where dozens were injured and many lost their lives, reflects these unsafe driving practices. Bus drivers, taking everything aside, drive their buses so fast to chase another bus that they forget they are carrying passengers as well. Most people might have experienced the same reckless behavior, where lives seem not to matter. The drivers do not realize the consequences of rash driving and haste.
On the other side of the coin is the fact that the road infrastructure in Ganderbal is poor. The authorities, especially the Border Roads Organization, have failed to some extent to provide good road conditions, which would make transportation safer and more efficient. According to reports from the Department of Traffic Police, in 2024, there were about 137 accidents in Ganderbal district, resulting in the loss of approximately 37 lives. I have personally witnessed the selfishness of bus drivers, putting the lives of passengers at stake.
The rate of fatal accidents could be decreased by creating awareness among drivers through educational campaigns and by monitoring traffic security more closely. The authorities should intervene in this matter and seek solutions to save the lives lost to road accidents. Let’s come together to protect the precious lives that matter.
