Chattergul-Gangbal As A Tourist Area Is A Recipe For Environmental Disaster

Must read

Proposed tourism development threatens biodiversity, water resources and livelihoods—local and environmental activists must unite against destructive project

The region stretching from Chattergul Bala to Gangbal Lake is one of the most pristine and ecologically rich areas in our region. It is home to lush meadows and diverse wildlife and serves as a vital water resource for the local communities. However, a dangerous proposal is threatening its natural beauty—this fragile ecosystem is proposed to be converted into a tourist destination. This clearly implies cutting down trees, constructing roads, and building hotels, which will lead to deforestation, pollution and irreversible environmental damage.

Tourism, when not managed sustainably, is one of the leading causes of environmental degradation. A cursory look at the popular tourist destinations in Kashmir Valley paints a grim picture—littered plastic waste, polluted water bodies and deforested landscapes. The area between Chattergul Bala and Gangbal Lake is one of the few remaining natural habitats (even as Gangbal Lake is already the victim of an unregulated Great Lakes Trek) and turning it into a commercial hub will only lead to its destruction.

One of the most alarming consequences of this proposal is the threat to the only source of water in the region. Increased human activity will pollute this vital resource, making it unsafe for both people and wildlife. The road construction alone will lead to massive deforestation, displacing wildlife and endangering species that rely on this ecosystem. The nomadic and pastoral population, and their livestock, who have lived in harmony with this land for centuries will lose their grazing meadows, threatening their livelihood and cultural heritage.

We must remember that whenever we disturb natural resources, we have to pay the price on a large scale. The consequences of reckless environmental destruction are long-term and often irreversible. Climate change, water scarcity, and habitat loss are all direct results of such short-sighted decisions.

This reckless project goes against all environmental standards and must be stopped. Instead of destroying nature for short-term profits, the administration should focus on conservation efforts and sustainable alternatives. Responsible eco-tourism, strict regulations, and community-led protection initiatives are the need of the hour.

We must raise our voices before it’s too late. I urge local authorities, environmental activists, and concerned citizens to stand against this destructive project and protect Chattergul Bala to Gangbal Lake for future generations.

Nature is not for sale, and our environment is not a business opportunity. Let’s act now!
