LONDON: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the UK, France, and Ukraine are collaborating to develop a ceasefire plan to present to the United States. This initiative follows discussions among the leaders of the three nations after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent tense meeting with US President Donald Trump.
Starmer expressed his belief that Trump is eager for a lasting peace in Ukraine, highlighting that American security guarantees will be essential for the plan’s success. The Prime Minister is set to host a summit of European leaders in London on Sunday, aimed at reinforcing support for Ukraine in light of the recent diplomatic turmoil.
The upcoming European leaders’ summit is now more crucial given the fallout from Trump’s public reprimand of Zelenskyy, which has put pressure on European leaders to address the ongoing conflict and consolidate their support for Ukraine.
Peter Ricketts, a former British national security adviser, noted that this summit represents an opportunity for European leaders to formulate a path forward amidst the diplomatic challenges. Starmer emphasized the potential to unite around a “just and lasting peace” that affirms Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensures regional security.
The meeting will feature leaders from over a dozen countries, including France, Germany, and Italy, along with important officials from NATO and the European Union. This collaborative effort comes as Zelenskyy received solidarity from many European leaders following the controversial White House incident, which aired live.
Starmer warmly welcomed Zelenskyy during his visit to London, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to Ukraine. The political climate in Europe has become tense, especially since Trump has begun direct peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising concerns about Ukraine’s status as a US ally.
Previous diplomatic engagements, including those with French President Emmanuel Macron, had fostered some hope for Euro-American unity. However, Zelenskyy faced significant backlash following Trump’s meeting, where the US president’s neutrality in negotiations raised alarms about America’s future support for Ukraine.
Defense experts emphasize the need for Europe to step in and bolster its military capability, with calls for countries to increase defense spending significantly. Starmer has committed to raising military expenditure to 2.5% of the UK’s GDP by 2027, while Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala urged EU nations to target 3% to effectively address the aggression facing Europe.
Macron echoed these sentiments, calling for a united and self-sufficient Europe, while highlighting the urgency of increased defense efforts in light of shifting American priorities.
