SRINAGAR: On the eve of Children’s Day, Government Girls Middle School, Onagam organized the screening of a film entitled ‘Accidents In Children: A Passionate Appeal For Prevention’ at Nadim Memorial Higher Secondary School, Bandipora auditorium, as part of the ‘Save Kids Initiative’.
The event was led by Dr. Raashid Fazili Senior Resident Department of Anesthesiology, SKIMS, who is a child safety campaigner. During his interaction with students, Dr. Raashid Fazili shared real-life incidents he encountered while treating children who had encountered life-threatening traumatic situations due to negligence by parents and other caregivers.
Through this video presentation, Dr. Fazili highlighted the risks children face in various environments—homes, roads, schools, and public places. He emphasized that, in developing countries, accidents are the second leading cause of death among children, following life-threatening infections. The growing incidence of childhood accidents could alter this scenario in coming decades and accidents are predicted to be the leading cause of child mortality, as is already the case in the developed world.
He urged both teachers and parents to take stringent precautions to prevent accidents that can be fatal for children or lead them to lifelong disability. He further enlisted the multiple losses to individual children, their families and the whole society arising as a result of childhood accidents.
Dr. Fazili strongly recommended that teachers should lead in promoting child safety initiatives to secure a safer future for all children. He illustrated his points by recounting distressing stories of accidents, underlining the fact that most of these were preventable and resulted from ignorance and carelessness.
The program concluded at an interesting SAFE-UNSAFE QUIZ in which the students participated enthusiastically.
The teachers of GMS Onagam and NM HSS, Bandipora lauded the Save Kids Initiative and vowed to strengthen it in these institutions and other places.
Earlier, Dr Fazili interacted with students and teachers at GMS Onagam.Headmaster Javaid Jawad thanked Dr Fazili for his contributions in children safety initiatives. Gifts were also distributed among the participant children.
