An Open letter to VC Kashmir University

Must read

Respected ma’am,
Allow me to introduce myself: I am a postgraduate student at the University of Kashmir. During these two years, time has had me broadening the horizons of my mindscape: from selectively reading a few chunks of topics during my graduation times to profusely consulting swathes of books for a topic nowadays, from mugging up a statement to delving into the whys of it, I am immensely grateful to my teachers, their assignments and workload.
However, as time has elapsed, I have come to reflect on the examination process. As a student completes the six-month course, the last month of which is taught at a bullet speed, unfortunately, the examination process begins, lacking an organised set of rubrics about paper-checking. There are no instructions beforehand given as to what matters in the answer sheet. On what grounds an answer is given a good score – or less, for that matter. Just a production of papers, and that’s it. A student is to remain to himself.
The unfortunate part is ‘little to nil’ talking about the required style of the answers, the usage of plain or jargon-filled complex English, active or passive sentences and so on. Talking beforehand about it is a no-no, and checking papers under unknown standards stands a mystery. As surroundings are to a blind man, the university rubrics are to a student. Lost!
Ma’am, our university is one of the leading educational institutes across India. It teaches students how to study, learn, and live. We can’t afford the swift production of papers alone; we must introduce classes before taking examinations, educate students about standards of paper assessment and instructions for grading; or mention on the question papers the required linguistic requirements. I reckon it would help a student stick to the writing criteria.
I hope your esteemed self will take care of it.
Thank you for your attention.
Sincerely,
Faizaan,
Post-graduate student
