SRINAGAR: The Committee on Environment of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly visited the Achan Waste Management Site at Eidgah to assess the city’s primary waste processing facility and inspect nearby lakes and wetlands, including Anchar, Hokersar, and Khushal Sar. Led by Chairman M.Y. Tarigami, the delegation included legislators, senior officials from the Housing & Urban Development Department, Srinagar Municipal Corporation, Pollution Control Committee, and Lakes Conservation Authority.
During the visit, the Committee examined the waste management framework, ongoing operations, legacy waste remediation, leachate treatment, and environmental safeguards. It also assessed illegal encroachments and pollution impacts on water bodies and public health. The aim was to review efforts to enhance scientific waste processing, environmental compliance, and sanitation standards.
Commissioner SMC briefed the delegation on initiatives to modernize waste management, including improving door-to-door collection, waste segregation, infrastructure upgrades, and sustainable disposal practices. The Committee urged the adoption of advanced technologies and best practices to transform Achan into a state-of-the-art, eco-friendly facility. It emphasized safeguarding urban health and the environment through efficient waste management.
Expressing concern over illegal landfilling, unauthorized construction, and dumping in wetlands, Tarigami highlighted the threats posed by encroachment and unplanned urban expansion to these ecologically sensitive water bodies. The Committee directed departments to develop a comprehensive, time-bound action plan for their protection and restoration, with periodic updates.
The visit underscores the Committee’s commitment to environmental conservation, scientific waste management, and urban sanitation, aiming to build a cleaner, greener Srinagar through collaborative efforts and forward-looking policies.
