Ganderbal kicks off 27th District Sqay Championship

Grand opening held at Preng, Kangan

GANDERBAL: The District Sqay Association Ganderbal on Monday officially inaugurated the 27th District Sqay Championship at the APJ Memorial Educational Institute, Preng Kangan, with the three-day event (April 27-29) serving as a premier platform for showcasing traditional martial arts talent in the region.
The championship has witnessed an overwhelming response from the sporting community. On the opening day, approximately 450 athletes representing various local clubs and schools demonstrated their skills. In total, the event is set to host over 750 participants across various weight and age categories, highlighting the growing popularity of Sqay in Ganderbal.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by SDPO Kangan, Shri SI Rajeev Raina, as Chief Guest, who officially declared the championship open. Special guests included Deputy Grand Master (Sqay Federation of India) Mr. Saleem Pathan, SHO Kangan Shri Ankush, and ZEO Kangan Mr. Naseem. Guests of Honour included International football coach Muzamil Mahmood, Chairman of APJ Memorial Educational Institute Preng, Principal of MB Education Institute Manigam, Team Radio Kangan 88.4 FM, CEO of Pride Saffron, and Ms. Safiya Rashid, Vice President, District Sqay Association Ganderbal.
During the ceremony, dignitaries lauded the District Sqay Association Ganderbal for their consistency in promoting this indigenous martial art. Speaking at the event, the Chief Guest and special guests emphasized that Sqay is not merely a sport but a vital tool for discipline, self-defense, and physical fitness.
The speakers specifically praised the role of Sqay in keeping the youth of the district engaged in constructive activities and away from social evils, noting the impressive turnout as a testament to the district’s rich athletic potential.
The championship will continue over the next two days, featuring intense bouts in both Loba (fighting) and Khawankay (prose/form) events. The closing ceremony is scheduled for the afternoon of April 29, where winners will be felicitated with medals and certificates. The programme is being celebrated under the theme of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and is closely monitored by the J&K Sqay Association.
