Recalls enduring spirit of resistance

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid homage to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, describing their sacrifice as a timeless symbol of courage and resistance against oppression.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister said, “On this day, we pay our heartfelt homage to the brave martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh. Their sacrifice stands as a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of our people.”
He added, “The courage and determination they displayed continue to inspire generations to uphold the values of liberty, justice, and dignity.”
The massacre, which occurred on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar, remains one of the darkest episodes of India’s colonial past. Hundreds of unarmed men, women, and children had assembled at the site when British troops, led by Reginald Dyer, opened fire without warning, resulting in heavy casualties.
The incident sparked nationwide outrage and proved to be a turning point in India’s freedom movement, strengthening resistance against British rule and galvanising nationalist sentiment across the country. Today, Jallianwala Bagh stands as a solemn memorial, visited by people from across India who come to honour the memory of those who lost their lives.
Leaders from across the political spectrum, along with citizens nationwide, marked the day by paying tribute to the martyrs, whose sacrifice continues to hold a profound place in India’s collective consciousness.
