Gain hands-on training at health camp

BANDIPORA: In a heartening display of compassion and community-based learning, students of PM Shri Government High School Laharwalpora took centre stage at a free health screening camp for senior citizens by bringing their grandparents for medical check-ups. The camp was organised at the Ayushman Arogya Mandir (Sub Centre), Laharwalpora, under the SENIORS’ Heart Care initiative by Moul Mouj Foundation in collaboration with Ummeed Foundation, GK Labs, and the school.
A total of 164 elderly patients were examined through an efficient point-of-care model, receiving consultations, basic investigations, and medicines within minutes—ensuring accessible healthcare for people in remote areas.
The highlight of the programme was the active participation of students from Classes 9 and 10, who not only facilitated the presence of their grandparents but also underwent valuable hands-on training. They were trained to use digital health devices such as blood pressure monitors, glucometers, and pulse oximeters, and learned to recognise warning signs of conditions like hypertension and hypoglycaemia. This practical exposure helped instil a strong sense of responsibility, awareness, and empathy towards elder care.
Addressing the gathering, Senior Geriatric Consultant Dr. Zubair Saleem urged students to stay away from bad company and substance abuse. Sharing the tragic account of a 19-year-old student from Bandipora who lost his life due to a drug overdose, he encouraged young minds to make informed and responsible life choices.
The camp also highlighted a high prevalence of uncontrolled non-communicable diseases among the elderly, underlining the need for regular monitoring and awareness. Dr. Saleem stressed the importance of medication adherence, a balanced diet, proper hydration, and physical activity for healthy ageing.
The initiative stood out as a powerful example of how student involvement, experiential learning, and family participation can collectively strengthen community health and foster intergenerational bonding.
Head of the Institution, Javaid Jawad, commended Dr. Zubair Saleem for providing students from a marginalised community with the opportunity to actively participate in the camp and gain practical skills to support the basic healthcare needs of senior citizens at home.
