NEW DELHI: Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has withdrawn from the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), opting out just weeks before the players’ auction. The 36-year-old, who was released by Punjab Kings and was expected to go under the hammer on December 16, said his decision came with “a lot of gratitude” for the league that shaped his career.
“After many unforgettable seasons in the IPL, I’ve decided not to put my name into the auction this year,” Maxwell announced in a statement on social media.
“It’s a big call, and one I make with a lot of gratitude for everything this league has given me. The IPL has helped shape me as a cricketer and as a person. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, represent incredible franchises, and perform in front of fans whose passion is unmatched. The memories, the challenges, and the energy of India will stay with me forever. Thank you for all your support over the years, hopefully see you soon. Cheers Maxi.”
Maxwell last featured for the finalists, Punjab Kings, in the 2025 season under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting. His campaign ended abruptly after he sustained a finger injury midway through the tournament, ruling him out of the remainder of the season.
The veteran all-rounder’s decision adds to a growing list of high-profile absentees ahead of IPL 2026. Andre Russell has already retired from the league and transitioned into a coaching role with Kolkata Knight Riders, while former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has withdrawn from the mini-auction in Abu Dhabi to focus on playing in the Pakistan Super League.
With Maxwell hinting that he may be stepping away from the IPL for good, the future of one of the tournament’s most impactful foreign players appears uncertain.
