GDC Shopain defeats GDC Sopore by 4 wickets in inter-college faculty tourney

BARAMULLA: Government Degree College (GDC) Shopian on Saturday defeated GDC Sopore by 4 wickets to win the inaugural match of the maiden inter-college faculty cricket tournament being organised by the GDC Baramulla.

Batting first after winning the toss, GDC Sopore scored 156 runs at the loss of five wickets in their 18 overs. Iqbal Ahmad was the highest scorer, scoring 87 runs in 53 balls with 12 fours and 3 sixes.

In reply, GDC Shopian chased down the target with three balls to spare. Umar Rashid was the highest scorer with 37 runs.

This is the first tournament organised for the faculty of colleges in the Kashmir division in recent times.

Speaking at the inauguration, the principal of the host college, Prof M Shafi Lone, said, “We are happy to organise this tournament. We want the faculty to inspire the students through sports as well.”

“The response we received to this tournament has been encouraging. We have teams from all parts of Kashmir participating in this tournament,” Prof Lone, who is captaining his college faculty team, said.

A total of eight teams are participating in the tournament, which is being played on a knockout basis. The final will be played on November 10.
