With rich biodiversity and traditional knowledge, Gurez can leverage MAP cultivation, processing, and eco-tourism to promote sustainable livelihoods, conserve biodiversity, and revive its cultural legacy amid modern development initiatives

The Gurez Valley, located in the high-altitude area of Bandipora district in north Kashmir, features stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and a vibrant cultural heritage. Despite its ecological riches and beauty, the valley is economically underdeveloped due to its isolation, inadequate infrastructure, and harsh climate. However, recent years have seen a growing awareness of the potential of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) to transform the rural economy and improve livelihood opportunities in this Himalayan area. Cultivating, processing, and marketing MAPs can provide a sustainable and eco-friendly source of income for local communities.
Rich Biodiversity And Traditional Knowledge
Gurez Valley lies in the northwestern Himalayas and is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot. Its varied altitudes, unique microclimates, and different types of forests support a wide range of plants, including many medicinal and aromatic species like Aconitum heterophyllum, Saussurea costus, Picrorhizakurroa, Viola odorata, and Valeriana jatamansi. Many of these species are rare, endangered, or native and have significant medicinal properties. Local communities in Gurez possess a wealth of ethnobotanical knowledge, passed down through generations. Traditional healers and elders have long used these plants to treat a variety of health issues, from common colds to digestive problems and inflammatory diseases. This indigenous knowledge, if documented and combined with modern scientific methods, can pave the way for valuable herbal products and therapeutic formulations.
Economic Potential Of MAPs
The demand for herbal and plant-based products is steadily increasing as more people seek natural health solutions and sustainable living. Reports show that the global herbal medicine market is expected to exceed USD 400 billion by 2030. India, being a major producer of medicinal herbs, has a significant role in this growing market. Regions like Gurez Valley, rich in medicinal plants, can greatly contribute to both domestic and international herbal product supply chains. MAPs need less input than traditional crops and can thrive in marginal lands, making them suitable for high-altitude areas like Gurez, where harsh winters and short growing seasons limit agricultural output. By focusing on high-value species, one can generate income. Growing Medicinal and aromatic plants can yield substantial profits if backed by proper harvesting, drying, packaging and marketing support.
Opportunities For Livelihood Diversification
- Cultivation and Domestication: Many MAPs are threatened by overharvesting and habitat loss. It’s crucial to cultivate and conserve these plants. Gurez’s traditional farming practices can incorporate MAP cultivation to provide farmers with additional income. Government programs like the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), National AYUSH Mission and Medicinal Plants Board can offer financial and technical help.
- Processing and Value Addition: The community can handle primary processing, such as drying, cleaning, grading, and powdering herbs. With minimal investment, cooperatives or self-help groups (SHGs) can engage in secondary processing, making herbal teas, essential oils, ointments and cosmetics to increase the market value of raw materials.
- Eco-Tourism and Herbal Trails: Gurez is drawing more tourists due to its natural beauty and unique culture. Developing eco-tourism linked to herbal trails, gardens and wellness retreats can create jobs for youth and women. Tourists can enjoy herbal experiences, including traditional therapies, guided plant walks and organic products, creating niche market segments.
- Research and Capacity Building: With the assistance of SKUAST-K in developing techniques for MAPs and conducting training programs, local farmers can become empowered. Training in good agricultural practices (GAP), post-harvest handling, and marketing is vital for a successful MAP-based economy.
Government Policy Support
The Government of India, along with the J&K administration, is actively advancing the medicinal and aromatic plants sector through a range of schemes designed to uplift farmers’ socio-economic status, enhance production and ensure quality through research, training, and market linkages. Major initiatives in this direction include the National Ayush Mission (NAM) and the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). The J&K Government has demonstrated a strong commitment to strengthening the MAP sector under both central and state missions. Supportive programs initiated by the Ministry of AYUSH hold significant potential to boost the MAP-driven economy in regions like Gurez. The HADP, in particular, provides an avenue to integrate MAPs into mainstream agriculture, thereby expanding livelihood opportunities. Equally important is community participation. Local institutions such as Van Panchayats and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) can play a vital role in ensuring equitable distribution of benefits while promoting sustainable practices. Furthermore, public-private partnerships present additional opportunities for value addition, branding and exports, ultimately unlocking the full potential of the MAP sector.
Conclusion
The Gurez Valley, with its unique ecological environment and traditional knowledge, has great potential for cultivating and using medicinal and aromatic plants. With the right mix of scientific research, policy support and community engagement, MAPs can become a key part of sustainable livelihoods in this remote area. This approach can not only foster economic stability but also aid in conserving biodiversity, reviving culture and supporting eco-friendly development in Jammu and Kashmir.
