A Tribute to Rahi Sir – Our Mentor

Must read

He left behind a legacy of wisdom, humility and inspiration

Some individuals leave the world quietly, but the light they leave behind continues to illuminate countless lives. Such was the life of Syed Ghulam Mohi Uddin Bukhari, affectionately known as Rahi Sahib—a teacher, a scholar, and above all, a noble soul whose legacy will endure for generations to come.

The recent passing of Rahi Sahib is a profound loss not only for the people of Kandoora, Beerwah in Budgam—his birthplace—but for the entire educational and literary community of the valley. A veteran educator and a man of remarkable intellect, he commanded deep respect and admiration wherever he went. Known for his wisdom, humility, and generosity, he was more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a guide, and a lasting source of inspiration to thousands.

Affectionately called “The Ocean of Knowledge”, Rahi Sahib stood as a towering figure in the world of academia. He was among the finest scholars of English literature our valley has produced. Despite his profound mastery of the subject, he carried his brilliance with such humility that even the most hesitant students felt encouraged to learn. His classrooms were not just places of instruction, but spaces of transformation—where young minds were nurtured, and futures quietly shaped.

Many of his students fondly remember him not only for his intellectual guidance but also for the warmth and dignity he brought to every interaction. He was one of those rare diamonds in the field of education whose very presence brought grace and depth to the system. It wasn’t just what he taught, but how he taught—with patience, passion, and a deep understanding of both his subject and his students.

But Rahi Sir’s greatness went beyond the classroom. He was a remarkable human being—generous, kind, and deeply compassionate. In an age often marked by materialism and self-interest, he stood apart. He never sought to amass wealth or worldly possessions. Instead, he dedicated his life to serving others, especially the poor and the needy, with sincerity and humility.

I had the personal privilege of being his student in Class 12. His teaching left a deep and lasting impression on me—not just through lessons from the syllabus, but through the strength of his character and the quiet dignity with which he lived. What made our bond even more special was that he had also taught my father many years earlier. That continuity across generations made his influence even more meaningful in my life. To me, he wasn’t just a teacher—he was a family legacy, a living symbol of wisdom, passed down with love and respect.

Rahi Sahib’s contributions extended well beyond formal education. He was a community builder, a beacon of moral and intellectual integrity, and a guiding light for many. His students have gone on to become teachers, scholars, and professionals, carrying forward the values and spirit he instilled in them. His impact is not confined to textbooks or classrooms—it lives on in the hearts and minds of those he mentored, inspired, and uplifted.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues—in the words he taught us, the values he embodied, and the countless lives he touched. Personalities like him are not just remembered; they are cherished, celebrated, and immortalised through the enduring light they spread in the world.

As an accomplished traveller on the sacred path of Love, we hope and pray that his noble soul finds eternal peace.
