SRINAGAR: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) hosted a significant guest lecture on the theme “One Nation, One Election” at the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Sabhagar, IGNOU Campus. The event aimed to promote awareness and discussion around electoral reforms and their impact on governance and nation-building.
The keynote address was delivered by Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Minister of Rural Development, Government of India. The Minister expressed strong support for the concept of “One Nation, One Election,” highlighting its potential to reduce the overall costs of conducting elections by utilizing the same infrastructure and personnel for all electoral processes. He emphasized that simultaneous elections could significantly lessen the administrative burden, allowing election machinery to focus on other critical tasks. He also underscored that implementing this system could lead to more efficient governance, increased stability, and the ability to focus on long-term policy initiatives.
Sunil Bansal, National General Secretary of the BJP, also shared his views, stating that synchronizing elections would have a profound impact on the nation’s development. He pointed out that it could lead to increased political stability, as governments would operate within fixed terms to implement policies effectively. Bansal further noted that this approach could result in cost savings, better resource utilization, and improved governance.
The live session was part of a nationwide outreach initiative designed to engage academic institutions in vital policy dialogues. IGNOU learners, staff, and officials actively participated, reflecting keen interest in the subject matter. The session included a post-lecture discussion where students from across the country explored the relevance of electoral reforms in today’s political landscape.
The lecture was streamed live on all IGNOU’s social media platforms, allowing students and faculty from regional centers to join virtually. An interactive Q&A session followed the keynote address, encouraging engagement from students from various disciplines such as Political Science, Public Administration, and Law. The audience appreciated the clarity and vision presented during the lecture, which sparked meaningful discussions.
In Srinagar, Regional Centre officials, staff, students, and their parents gathered in large numbers to watch the live broadcast. Additionally, a Study Center at Amar Singh College Srinagar facilitated active participation by college students, faculty members, and IGNOU students, who watched the session with great interest.
Dr. A.H. Rizvi, Regional Director of IGNOU Srinagar, expressed gratitude to the university for organizing such interactive and outreach programs. He encouraged students to actively engage with contemporary policy issues, emphasizing the importance of understanding electoral reforms for the future of democratic governance.
