PCOS In Kashmir: Effects On Facial Features, Psychological Disturbance & Fertility

Must read

With the increasing number of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the condition has had a gruesome and very serious effect on the whole population of J&K.

The two-fold rise in PCOS cases has led to disastrous mental trauma for the womenfolk of Jammu and Kashmir.

Hirsutism

Hirsutism is a common clinical condition characterized by excessive hair growth, mostly involving the areas of the chin, neck, abdomen, chest, or back.

PCOS-related acne often flares on the lower face, including the jawline, chin, and upper neck. Acne lesions are deeper, larger, and slower to resolve. Some cases of PCOS also show balding or thinning of hair and, occasionally, acanthosis nigricans.

PCOS & Fertility

PCOS can make it harder to become pregnant because it leads to irregular menstrual cycles and prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs regularly (ovulation).

The resulting hormonal imbalance makes it challenging for women to conceive.

Psychological Impact

Beyond physical health, PCOS can also take a toll on mental health, with many women experiencing:

Anxiety

Depression

Emotional distress

Bipolar disorder

OCD

Irritability

Brain fog

Eating disorders

Social stigma

Weight gain

Management

PCOS cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be managed. Treatment options may vary because someone with PCOS may experience a range of symptoms.

Treatment options include:

  1. Lifestyle changes
  2. Medication
  3. Surgery

Lifestyle Changes

For overweight women, symptoms and the overall risk of developing long-term health problems from PCOS can be greatly reduced by losing excess weight.

Even a 5% weight loss can lead to significant improvement in PCOS.

Daily exercise, workouts, diet management, and avoiding junk food play a crucial role in managing PCOS.

Medication

Different drugs are used to treat the symptoms of PCOS:

Clomifene is the first drug of choice for women with PCOS who are trying to conceive.

Metformin, commonly used in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, is also used in PCOS patients due to its ability to lower insulin and blood sugar levels.

For unwanted hair growth and hair loss, options include:

Eflornithine

Laser hair removal

Cyproterone acetate

Spironolactone

Flutamide

Finasteride

IVF treatment may also be considered.

Surgery

A minor surgical procedure called Laparoscopic Ovarian Drilling (LOD) is sometimes performed to treat PCOS.
