SRINAGAR: The residents of Hajin in Bandipora are in a state of panic as a major portion of the road along the embankment of the Jhelum River has caved in following fresh downpours, reports and locals said.
According to locals, a significant part of the road in Sheikh Mohalla, Hajin, has already eroded, with cracks widening with each passing hour.
The alarming situation has raised serious concerns among the local populace, who accuse the administration of negligence.
“The road had shown signs of deterioration months ago, but no one took action. Now, we are left at the sheer mercy of Almighty,” said Gh. Hassan, a local resident.
“We have repeatedly urged the authorities and public representatives to intervene and repair the road, but unfortunately, no one has stepped forward. Maybe they are waiting for a tragedy to happen so they can visit us and gain political mileage,” he added.
We have been left at Allah’s mercy as no one is paying any heed towards our problems. He said.
Additionally, locals reported that power supply to the area has also been disrupted, throwing daily life into disarray.
Meanwhile, SDM Sumbal, Tehsildar Hajin, SDPO Hajin, SHO Hajin, Exen I&FC, and other officials have been continuously visiting the site to assess the situation.
During his visit to the spot, senior leader Imtiyaz Parray criticized the administration for the inordinate delay in starting the restoration work.
PDP District President Bandipora, Syed Sajad Hussain, held a silent protest at the main market in Hajin, condemning the district administration’s failure to initiate timely repairs.
Following public outrage, the district administration has begun temporary restoration work on the damaged road.
