Revenue Dept to review conflicting claims

GANDERBAL: The construction of a Rural Development Department (RDD) building in Gund, Ganderbal, has come to a halt due to a land dispute with the Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Department.
The F&ES claims that the land was previously allotted to them by the Revenue Department, making the RDD’s ongoing construction unauthorized.
On Sunday morning, the Fire department officials intervened and stopped the construction, presenting documents they claim prove the land was designated for a new fire station to improve emergency services in the area.
Speaking to Kashmir Reader, Block Development Officer (BDO) Gund, Nazir Ahmad Nazir said the land had been earmarked for the RDD building by the former Tehsildar and Patwari of Gund. So far, approximately Rs 16 lakhs have already been spent on the project, he said.
“The Fire Department’s claim is inaccurate. Construction was initially halted two years ago due to the presence of a high-tension power line at the site, which has since been removed. The project resumed only after securing necessary approvals,” Nazir said.
He further questioned how another department could stake a claim on the land after two years and significant financial investment.
When contacted, Tehsildar Gund, Manzoor Ahmad, confirmed that construction has been paused while the Revenue Department reviews documents from both departments. “We are investigating both claims and will resolve the matter through the appropriate channels,” he assured.
The halted construction has caused concern among the local community. Chairman of the Civil Society Tehsil Gund, Irfan Raina called for a resolution as both the fire station and RDD building are vital facilities for the area.
“We need clarity on this issue as soon as possible. The dispute is affecting Gund residents, and we hope both departments can reach a resolution quickly to prevent further disruption,” he said.
The fate of the RDD building and the proposed fire station now rests with the Revenue Department’s final decision, which is expected to clarify ownership and allow necessary development work to continue.
