SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has raised urgent concerns over the severe ramifications of climate change and erratic weather patterns on the region’s economy. With significant evidence emerging of the impact of climate-related developments, KCCI is calling for immediate action to safeguard both the environment and economic interests of Kashmir.
As the summer months approach, concerns over drying springs and dwindling water bodies have escalated, casting uncertainty over water availability crucial for agriculture, horticulture, and various economic activities. Factors such as climate change, environmental neglect, mismanagement of wetlands, deforestation, pollution, and unsustainable water management practices have exacerbated the situation. The effects of reduced rainfall and snowfall, alongside rapidly melting glaciers, pose serious risks to livelihoods across the region.
A staggering 80% reduction in hydroelectric power generation has been reported, significantly affecting both industrial operations and residential power supply. This decline presents a formidable challenge to the local economy, which relies heavily on consistent energy resources, the chamber said in a statement issued here. It added that the tourism sector — a vital economic pillar — has suffered considerable setbacks. A lack of adequate snowfall has led to the postponement of the prestigious Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg, jeopardizing adventure tourism and diminishing the region’s reputation as a winter sports destination.
In an economy increasingly dependent on international tourism, the drop in visitor numbers, particularly in the adventure and recreational segments, is alarming, the KCCI said, adding that this downturn not only threatens foreign exchange earnings but also jeopardizes jobs within the sector.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has acknowledged these pressing challenges. He said we are facing a significant water crisis this year, a situation that has been evolving over several years.
In light of these developments, KCCI said it intends to engage stakeholders through extensive programmes and seminars aimed at developing effective climate change mitigation strategies. The focus will be on practical solutions to confront the environmental crises threatening the region’s economy.
KCCI advocates for enhanced protections for Kashmir’s vital water bodies, rivers, wetlands, and lakes, emphasizing immediate conservation efforts as essential for preserving these natural resources. The chamber said is committed to promoting a sustainable balance between economic development and environmental stewardship.
To address these pressing concerns, KCCI has called upon the government to formulate a contingency plan and establish a high-powered committee led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. It is seeking adequate financial allocations in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir budget to tackle the immediate challenges posed by climate change and its impact on the region’s economy.
