The Kashmir Valley, known for its scenic beauty and challenging terrain, has always demanded efficient and comfortable transportation. The introduction of train services from south Kashmir to north Kashmir was a significant development, promising relief to commuters. However, a glaring issue plaguing this vital service is the scarcity and poor maintenance of washrooms, which has become a major inconvenience for travellers.
Despite being a key mode of transportation for thousands of commuters daily, the trains operating in Kashmir are notoriously under-equipped when it comes to basic sanitation facilities. Most trains either lack functional washrooms or have them locked and inaccessible during journeys. This problem is particularly acute for passengers travelling long distances, such as those commuting between south Kashmir (Anantnag, Qazigund) and north Kashmir (Baramulla, Sopore). Although washrooms are available at some train stations, they are frequently dysfunctional, locked, or in unsanitary conditions. This situation leaves passengers, especially the elderly, women, and children, in distress during their commute.
Prolonged journeys without access to clean washrooms can lead to health problems, including urinary tract infections and dehydration, as travellers often refrain from drinking water to avoid the need for restrooms. Women and elderly passengers face heightened challenges due to the lack of facilities. For women, this issue is compounded by privacy concerns, while older adults often struggle with mobility issues and require frequent access to restrooms. Tourists also use the train network to explore the valley.
The lack of proper sanitation facilities can leave a poor impression on visitors and deter them from using the service in the future. Even when washrooms are available at stations, their maintenance is often overlooked. Issues like clogged toilets, lack of running water, and unclean facilities are rampant. The absence of a proper mechanism to address passenger complaints regarding sanitation has further aggravated the situation. Functional and well-maintained washrooms should be prioritized in all train compartments. A dedicated team should be appointed to upkeep washrooms at stations and onboard. Regular cleaning and inspections can ensure that facilities remain functional and hygienic. Establishing a system where passengers can report issues in real time could help authorities address problems promptly. Educating passengers about maintaining cleanliness in public washrooms can also play a role in keeping these facilities usable. Partnerships with municipal bodies and sanitation agencies can help improve the overall cleanliness of washrooms at train stations.
The scarcity and poor condition of washrooms on Kashmir trains are not merely an inconvenience but a violation of basic hygiene and dignity for commuters. Authorities must address this pressing issue with urgency, ensuring that train journeys in the valley are not only scenic but also comfortable and traveller-friendly. Investments in better infrastructure and regular maintenance are essential to providing passengers with the dignity they deserve during their commute.
