J&K’s media fraternity urges CM Omar to empanel emerging newspapers

SRINAGAR: The media fraternity of Jammu & Kashmir has called upon Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to include emerging newspapers in the government’s empanelment process for advertisements. This plea comes in light of the Chief Minister’s recent review aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in the distribution of government ads among media houses.
Despite the commendable intentions of the review, industry representatives assert that it overlooks the significant contributions of newer publications that have demonstrated a commitment to high-quality journalism. They said these newspapers have diligently worked to meet the eligibility criteria for empanelment yet remain sidelined, lacking access to vital government advertising revenue that supports their growth and sustainability.
“The absence of formal recognition for these emerging media outlets poses questions about the inclusivity and equity of the current media policy. These publications often serve as vital platforms for underrepresented voices and perspectives that mainstream media frequently neglect. Their exclusion not only stifles their development but also threatens the foundational principles of pluralism essential for a healthy democracy,” the media fraternity said.
Members of the news media fraternity argue that equitable treatment and support for all publications, particularly those that prioritize ethics and integrity in journalism, are crucial. Assisting these newer outlets fosters diversity, sparks healthy competition, and enhances the overall media landscape, they stressed.
The media community has expressed hope that the Chief Minister will reconsider the media policy framework, allowing deserving newspapers—especially those striving to make a meaningful impact—to enter the empanelment process. This adjustment could significantly enhance fairness in the allocation of government advertising funds and reaffirm the government’s commitment to a robust and independent press in Jammu & Kashmir, it said.
