CAIRO: Israeli airstrikes in northern Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 29 people, with 19 killed in a single strike on a home sheltering displaced families in Beit Lahiya, according to Palestinian medical officials. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has intensified following the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli fatalities, primarily civilians, and the abduction of around 250 individuals.
In addition to the fatal strike in Beit Lahiya, another airstrike near Kamal Adwan Hospital killed a woman and her two children. A separate incident in the Nuseirat refugee camp left at least seven people dead, including two children. The Israeli military has not commented on these incidents but asserts that it aims to minimize civilian casualties while accusing Hamas of hiding among civilians, thus endangering their lives.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with an estimated 65,000 to 75,000 people still in severely affected areas like Beit Lahiya and Jabaliya, facing acute shortages of food, water, and medical care. United Nations officials warn of a potential famine in northern Gaza, highlighting that aid distribution has been hampered by ongoing violence and a breakdown in law and order. Civilians are struggling to access essentials as looting and infrastructural collapse complicate relief efforts.
The U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have been mediating talks between Israel and Hamas, aiming to establish a ceasefire. However, progress has stalled as Hamas insists that it will not release hostages until the war ends and Israeli forces withdraw. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue military operations until Hamas is dismantled and all hostages are returned.
Local health officials report that Israel’s retaliatory offensive has led to over 44,000 Palestinian deaths, with women and children comprising more than half of this number. The situation has created a humanitarian crisis, with reports of thousands of Palestinians missing amidst the conflict. While Israel claims to have targeted over 17,000 militants, it has not provided substantial evidence to back these assertions.
As the conflict persists, the urgency for a resolution becomes increasingly critical, with UN officials pressing for humanitarian access and ceasefire negotiations to alleviate the suffering of those affected.
