Generally speaking, education is the modification of behaviour. It provides individuals with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to reach their full potential, secure meaningful sustenance, and actively participate in society in a constructive manner. Education opens the realms of learning and encourages a blissful existence. By virtue of it, an individual can take advantage of their potential and abilities, as it is a driving force that shapes one’s thought processes. It shapes an individual’s aspirations and motivates them to pursue the path of their dreams.
Education promotes inclusivity, inspires creativity, nurtures ability, and fosters competitiveness. Education brings a complete transformation to an individual’s life. Whether it is one’s social or moral roles, all are guided by virtue, in addition to the primary objective of seeking knowledge. Education encapsulates all that humans can comprehend and plays a unique role everywhere. Though the importance of education is known to all, the way it is being pursued and promoted has belittled its objective. Nowadays, children are being taught to get educated merely to make money, which undermines its sanctity. No wonder the issues we are witnessing in our societies can be attributed to the lack of effectiveness in the quality of education.
How to fix it? Who will set the norms and lead the change, which is the need of the hour?
To address this, there are roles and responsibilities that all stakeholders must understand and exhibit at their respective levels.
According to official figures, the literacy rate of Jammu & Kashmir stands at 68.74%, whereas the All-India average literacy rate is 74.04%. While the literacy rate is showing a growing trend, we still have only 58.01% literate females compared to 78.26% literate males. Furthermore, the urban literacy rate stands at 68.75% compared to 53.61% in rural areas. The difference is visible and needs to be minimized.
While a lot has already been said and discussed about the importance of education, the ground reality is that we have yet to realize the dream of achieving this milestone. Some of the hindering factors include poverty, stereotypical mindsets, lack of accessibility, future uncertainty, and lack of resources. The government enacted the Right to Education (RTE) Act in 2009, making it a fundamental right for every child to receive free education from ages 6 to 14. This has been very encouraging, but we still have a long way to go to ensure that all children are enrolled.
Before stepping in to bridge these gaps, the prime aspect that needs immediate attention is mindset. We can achieve anything only if we believe we can. We need to shift our focus from problems to solutions. We must concentrate on identifying opportunities rather than being passive.
The first step is to challenge the stereotypical mindset of some parents. While some have the capability to educate their children, others do not. Among those who can, some only want their children to pursue education for monetary benefits, while others, who lack the ability, cannot foresee the impact of education on their children’s future. For these parents, we need to instill confidence in the bright future of their children. Parents are the guiding force for their children. They motivate and inspire them to take on challenges head-on and keep moving forward even in adversity. Children, in turn, look up to their parents as role models, which is why they are keen to replicate their teachings.
Though enough emphasis is placed on making children educated, it will be of little value if parents remain ignorant about its essence. We need to engage with parents, make them aware of the importance of education, and help them understand its role in transforming and revolutionizing their lives. Parents must be made to see that education, guided by justifiable values and ethics, is a key part of quality education.
As we know, the children of today are the citizens of tomorrow. To ensure a bright future, we must make every effort to educate everyone in their own way, with a strong emphasis on quality education.
Parents need to support their children’s pursuit of learning, no matter how long it takes. In return, this can strengthen the bond of trust and confidence between them.
Teachers: Pillars of Society
Teachers are the pillars of society and the builders of nations. A teacher should know the art of blending knowledge with social and ethical values to give education the touch of sanctity that has the power to change hearts and mould behaviour. What is needed today is for the teacher to play the role of a mentor, guide, and facilitator. The learning process has changed over time, and so must the role of the teacher. Today, successful teachers are those who are flexible and understand the needs of their students. A teacher should be able to differentiate between the learning abilities of their pupils and respond in the appropriate manner.
Moreover, the teacher must act as a facilitator, bridging the gap between students by building confidence in an appropriate manner. Teachers should engage in vision-building exercises with students to help them understand their aspirations and how to pursue them. With the advent of modernization, learning tools have been refined. To keep pace with these changes, we must adopt contemporary practices that play a pivotal role in our educational system. Online platforms should be utilized to improve the reach of the educational system.
Teachers too need continuous capacity building to improve their skills in line with the changing demands of the times. The goal should be to spread quality education by breaking barriers and broadening its reach, thereby contributing effectively to the overall development of individuals.
Students: The Spirit of Learning
Students, on the other hand, should exhibit the spirit of learners. A true learner is always curious, seeking to understand things with a positive mindset, drawing analogies, and reaching conclusions. Students must understand that the true essence of education lies not only in gaining knowledge but in applying it in their daily lives. They should reflect this in their interactions with the outside world.
Quality education brings radical changes in an individual’s attitude, differentiating them in all aspects of life and guiding them toward a more humane approach to life, which in turn helps uphold humanity with humility. While sustenance is an important aspect of education, it is essential to remember that education shapes an individual’s perspective toward life, which should always be compassionate, constructive, positive, and rational. Students should always be obedient and disciplined. They should encourage their peers to generate positive outcomes. As they seek to learn, they should also keep in mind their parents’ aspirations.
Addressing the Gaps: Accessibility, Resources, and Policy
Understanding roles and responsibilities are crucial in the endeavour of “Education for All.” Moving forward, other factors, such as the lack of accessibility and resources, must be addressed. Whether in terms of infrastructure, pupil-teacher ratios, availability of modern teaching aids, exposure visits, career counselling sessions, or effective feedback and monitoring systems, all these should be adopted to inspire and motivate students through various educational mediums.
To ensure these improvements, the government must closely monitor the implementation of policies to make sure that the benefits are extended to students in both letter and spirit.
Given the uncertainties of the future, there is a need to devise policies that encourage students to embark on this life-changing journey in a meaningful way. They should be given opportunities to harness their abilities and potential, while also ensuring access to sustainable livelihood opportunities. It is imperative to build resources to meet the ever-increasing demand for meaningful employment. The government must take responsibility for delivering these services and fulfilling its commitment to the goal of educating all.
Special emphasis should be placed on minimizing the gender gap in literacy levels. Educating a mother can have a profound impact on her children, motivating them to pursue education as well.
Education is an Ornament in Adversity
Nations that value education and take necessary steps to nurture the educational system develop at a fast pace and take advantage of their resources for the collective benefit of all. We need to adopt a system that fosters reasoning and research among learners while ensuring that their choices are valued and accepted at the highest level.
In light of the essence of education, it is essential to pursue education with its primary objective in mind, rather than making it a tool to achieve self-serving motives. We are responsible for giving back to society and making the world a better place to live by contributing individually. We must understand the significance of education at all levels and work together to realize the dream of a developed nation. This requires collective action and recognition on all fronts to encourage those who truly value this blessing. Our priority should be to address the bottlenecks and contribute to the mission of “Education for All”.
