BSF organizes half marathon to revitalize Wullar Lake tourism

BANDIPORA: In a spirited initiative aimed at revitalizing Wullar Lake’s position on the global tourism map and promoting health and environmental awareness, the Border Security Force (BSF), supported by the International Human Rights Organization (IHRO), organized a half marathon in Bandipora on Sunday.
The marathon, with 21 km, 10 km, and other race categories for both male and female participants, was flagged off by BSF Inspector General Ashok Yadav (IPS), accompanied by IHRO President Altaf Ahmad. The event was graced by a prominent actress, making it a memorable gathering of sports, community, and purpose.
Over 300 participants from across the country took part in the marathon. It started from the BSF headquarters and culminated at Wullar Vintage Park in Bandipora.
Participants expressed gratitude for being part of the Wullar Half Marathon and hoped similar events would be held in the future. According to the organizers, the half marathon was more than just a race; it symbolized collaborative efforts to uplift Wullar Lake as a premier tourist destination in Asia.
“Wullar Lake is renowned across the continent for its unique ecosystem and scenic beauty,” said an IHRO representative. “However, it has often been overlooked in the broader tourism narrative. Our goal is to draw the attention of government agencies and stakeholders to its immense potential.”
The organizers emphasized the potential for economic transformation for the local community. “This event serves as a beacon to promote tourism, which will boost economic opportunities for communities around the lake,” the representative added. “Such initiatives pave the way for better livelihoods, bringing direct benefits to local residents.”
Beyond economic aspirations, the marathon also conveyed a message of unity and harmony. “We hope this event fosters stronger bonds between the security forces and the people of Jammu and Kashmir, promoting peace and harmony,” officials said.
IGP BSF Kashmir Ashok Yadav explained that the primary objective of the marathon was to showcase the beauty of Wullar Lake and inspire the youth of Bandipora to embrace sports and display their talents.
Among others present were MLA Bandipora Nizamuddin Bhat, CO 13RR, DySP Hajin Rameez Rashid, DySP Sumbal Mohammad Amin, IHRO Chairman Nem Singh Premi, DySP Headquarters Lateef Ahmad, DySP DAR Ahmad Shafi, SHO Aragam ,Yaqub Dunoo, and other prominent members of the organization.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, honoring the first, second, and third-place winners in various age categories.
