Online Gambling: The Last Nail In The Coffin

Must read

The article highlights the causes of online gambling, including the unquenchable thirst for materialism, indifference to hard work, callous attitude, and copying others, and stresses the need for moderation and responsibility to avoid the destructive consequences of this addiction.

There was no shortage of issues before the newest type of anti-social element slowly crept into our lives, manifesting itself in the form of people resorting to selling their kidneys and houses to pay off debts. Such is our pathetic situation that hardly anyone has been left unscathed by the growing menace of online gambling. Everyone is sailing in the same boat of destruction. From toddlers to the elderly, the lure of earning more and more without hard work has made the situation woeful. Unscrupulous elements have always been on the hunt to devour everyone. The icing on the cake came in the form of the Internet in general and online gambling in particular, setting our already smouldering houses on fire. It is a pity that instead of treading the path of moderation in our lives, we have opted for extremes. Knowing fully well that the allurement of easy money is a path full of thorns and waywardness, we still keep walking on it.
Now the question arises: what are the causes responsible for the omnipresence of online gambling? In the following lines, some causes are briefly discussed.
The first cause is the unquenchable thirst for materialism. Almost every person is in the race to satisfy and quench their thirst for material things. However, due to some unavoidable circumstances, they are unable to fulfill these desires. This creates a deep void in their inner self, leaving them on tenterhooks, ready to exploit any situation that promises to quench this long-smouldering thirst, often leading to irresponsible behaviour.
The second cause is indifference to hard work. The total apathy towards hard work results in an unending search for ways to earn easy money without shedding a drop of sweat. To fulfill the basic necessities of life, one has to earn and spend. However, earning and spending is not everybody’s cup of tea. It requires going through a grind and breaking one’s bones to arrange for a morsel of food. Sacrificing one’s dreams in the sweetest sleep and enduring scorching heat and biting cold, makes it possible to enjoy and cherish the happy moments of hard work.
The third cause is our callous attitude. We are totally bankrupt when it comes to attitudes. In other words, it has become our duty to maintain a fake sense of dignity and identity in our minds. In this way, we never shy away from putting our lives at risk. We consciously embrace the monster of online gambling while making merry in the ephemeral and transitory pseudo-world of comfort and bliss. Our attitudes mar our ability to think clearly and prevent us from taking responsible and calculated risks.
The fourth and last cause is copying others. We unnecessarily imitate others, setting our houses on fire in the process. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. Imitation often leads to destruction, and this is particularly true in the case of online gambling. If, by chance, a few people win hefty sums, that doesn’t mean it is possible for everyone to become rich in the blink of an eye.
The above-mentioned causes make it crystal clear that the situation has taken on dangerous proportions. To rid ourselves of this menace, we must set our houses in order. Some days ago, a person lost 28 lakh rupees due to online gambling. In the same vein, many youngsters have been swallowed by the giant monster of online gambling. In the garb of modernity, we are heading for colossal damage. When shall we wake up from this deep slumber? Who is going to nudge us? No one is going to do it for us. It is we who must choose moderation in every aspect of life from now on.
Economic crises have engulfed the world. Savings are evaporating quickly. Inflation is on the rise. The basic necessities of life are not being fulfilled. Despair and gloom have become the other names of the present world. In this atmosphere, investing money in online gambling is fraught with dangers and has the potential to spiral out of control, leaving a long-lasting impact on our lives. Every month, crores of rupees are wasted on online gambling. Families are being destroyed, and the bonds that once held us together like solid rock are becoming fragile with each dent.
Now is the appropriate time to dust off the temptations of easy money and tread the path of hard work and foresight. I am worried about the upcoming times that are likely to present even uglier and more monstrous forms of gambling and other types of anti-social behaviour. Let us try to show indifference to the glitter of online gambling and set our houses in order.
