Urges reversal of J&K’s ‘unfair policy’
SRINAGAR: Er. Ehtisham Khan, a prominent social and student rights activist and Co-founder of The Purpose (NGO) has commended the Supreme Court’s recent landmark verdict allowing sub-classification within Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) for reservations. The judgment, delivered by a seven-judge Constitution bench in a 6:1 verdict, is seen as a significant step towards ensuring substantive equality and addressing historical marginalization within these communities.
“This historic verdict by the Supreme Court recognizes the heterogeneity within the SC and ST communities and aims to ensure that the benefits of affirmative action reach those who are genuinely in need. It is a commendable step towards achieving true equality,” said Er. Ehtisham Khan. “The judgment aligns with the principles of substantive equality and justice, highlighting the need for a nuanced approach to reservations.”
“I welcome this decision as a crucial move towards rectifying the imbalances within the SC and ST communities. It is a recognition of the fact that treating these communities as monolithic blocks undermines the very purpose of reservations,” Er. Ehtisham Khan added.
However, while this verdict marks progress at the national level, Er. Ehtisham Khan highlighted the ongoing issue with Jammu and Kashmir’s new reservation policy, which has been met with widespread opposition from the general category aspirants.
“The decision of the J&K administration to implement a new reservation policy has crushed the aspirations of the open merit category, which constitutes around 70% of the population. The unfair and discriminatory nature of this policy must be addressed immediately,” stated Er. Ehtisham Khan. “It is disheartening to see the dreams and ambitions of countless students and young professionals being shattered by a policy that fails to recognize their merit and hard work.”
Er. Ehtisham Khan has been at the forefront of advocating for the reversal of J&K’s new reservation policy, extending his full support to those affected by this unjust policy. He emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in addressing this issue.
“I have been advocating for the reversal of this policy from the very beginning and will continue to do so with unwavering commitment,” added Er. Ehtisham Khan.
“I urge all stakeholders, including students, parents, educators, and the broader community, to stand together and demand a fair and equitable system. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that merit and hard work are recognized and rewarded. The future of our youth depends on it,” Er. Ehtisham Khan concluded.
