‘Opp made Hindus and Muslims fight under garb of secularism’: PM

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday accused the Opposition of spreading lies over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), saying it is “making Hindus and Muslims fight by doing vote bank politics”.
“The people of the country now know that by doing vote bank politics and making Hindus and Muslims fight, you let the nation burn in a communal fire for over 60 years. You wore a garb of secularism, but Modi has exposed your truth,” PM Modi said at a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Lalganj.
Doubling down on his attack against the Opposition, he said, “The INDI alliance has completely sunk in the quagmire of appeasement. The top leaders of the Samajwadi Party are making cheap remarks about the Ram Temple every day.”
He went on to laud the CAA, underlining that the work of granting Indian citizenship to refugees has begun. “These are the people who have been living in our country as refugees for a long time, these are the people who were victims of the partition of India on the basis of religion,” Modi said.
The Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla physically handed over the first set of citizenship certificates to 14 applicants on Wednesday, two months after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had notified the rules for implementation of CAA.
Speaking about the voter turnout in Srinagar in Phase 4 of Lok Sabha elections, Modi said, “The excitement shown by people of Srinagar in polls is proof no one can bring back Article 370 and do politics of vote bank.”
Srinagar saw a turnout of nearly 38 per cent — the highest since 1996.
With only a few states still left to cast ballots in the Lok Sabha polls, PM Modi has turned his focus on a state with a large chunk of seats voting in the remaining phases: Uttar Pradesh.
