Man critically injured in bear attack in Pampore; Wildlife Dept launches search op

PAMPORE: A 45-year-old man, identified as Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Ghulam Hassan, resident of Konibal Pampore, was critically injured in a terrifying encounter with a bear early Wednesday morning. The incident occurred while Nazir was tending to his sheep in the Saffron Karewas of Konibal village, as reported by local residents to Kashmir Reader.
According to eyewitnesses, Nazir’s cries for help alerted nearby locals, who promptly rushed to the scene and rescued him. However, he sustained severe injuries to his face and neck during the attack.
Nazir was swiftly transported to the Sub District Hospital Pampore for initial medical treatment. Due to the severity of his condition, he was later referred to SKIMS Soura Srinagar for further medical intervention.
In response to the alarming incident, the Wildlife Department Range Khrew initiated a comprehensive search operation in Konibal village to locate and capture the wild bear responsible for the attack. Wildlife officials, equipped with tranquilizer guns, swiftly mobilized to the area in pursuit of the bear.
Abdul Hameed, Block Officer of Wildlife Range Khrew, revealed that they received immediate notification from local authorities about the bear attack on Nazir Ahmad Sheikh. Subsequently, a dedicated team was dispatched to Konibal to initiate the search operation. Hameed assured residents of continuous efforts until the bear is safely captured.
In light of the incident, Hameed also urged residents of Konibal and neighboring villages, including Dusoo, Androosa, and Krunchoo, to exercise caution. With agricultural activities underway, he emphasized the importance of working in groups and remaining vigilant to mitigate the risk of further wildlife encounters.
As the search operation continues, authorities remain hopeful of capturing the bear swiftly, prioritizing the safety and well-being of the local community.
