WhatsApp beta adds chat lock for companion devices and private mentions for stories

Bengaluru: Meta has introduced two new features in the latest version of WhatsApp beta, allowing users to lock chats on companion smartphones and make private mentions when posting a story. First reported by WABetainfo, these features are now available on WhatsApp beta version 2.24.8.4, enabling users to better protect their chats on all connected devices.

WhatsApp previously added the ability to lock individual chats with a passcode. However, until now, this feature was limited to the primary smartphone. Android smartphone users on the latest beta version of WhatsApp can now finally lock chats by setting up a unique passcode even on companion devices.

It’s important to note that users need to set a secret passcode on all companion devices, and the same passcode has to be configured on the primary device. Additionally, biometric authentication can also be used to protect/unlock locked chats on WhatsApp.

Private mentions is another useful feature soon to be available for WhatsApp users. With this feature, users can notify select individuals about a status. Currently, this feature is available on the latest version of WhatsApp beta for iOS. When someone is mentioned in a story, only they will be able to see the tag, which remains invisible to other users.

WhatsApp is also testing numerous new features, including displaying an end-to-end encryption badge. As a major update, the company recently moved the navigation bar from the top to the bottom, making it easier to access most menu options.
