Sensitization prog held at Govt Degree College Awantipora on International Women’s Week

Speakers highlight women-centric programs and legislation, advocate gender equality

AWANTIPORA: In commemoration of International Women’s Week, the Department of Higher Education and Welfare (DHEW), Mission Shakti, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, organized a sensitization programme at Government Degree College Awantipora.
The primary objective of the programme was to raise awareness and sensitize students and staff members about various women-centric programs and legislation. These included the National Policy for the Empowerment of Women (2001), the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Protection, and Redressal) Act 2013, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act 2012, and the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.
Amir Hussain, a specialist in financial literacy from DHEW, emphasized the significance of celebrating Women’s Day and highlighted the government’s initiatives, particularly the establishment of Mission Shakti in every district to empower women. He stressed the importance of providing girls with equal opportunities for self-exploration and independence, advocating for equal respect and support from parents and society. Hussain underscored the need to change societal mindsets through increased awareness programs, acknowledging that women in the 21st century continue to face challenges due to societal attitudes and negligence.
Ms. Kousera Khaliq, a para-legal professional from the OSC, delivered a lecture on the OSC’s role and the Domestic Violence Act. Additionally, Ms. Hansu Nisa, a social worker from the Special Cell for Women, sensitized students about sexual harassment in workplaces, officials told Kashmir Reader.
Gender Specialist Ms Nelofer Jan from DHEW Pulwama provided insights into child marriage issues and the National Policy for Women 2016.
The programme witnessed the participation of various experts, including specialists in financial literacy and gender, para-legal professionals from OSC, social workers from the Special Cell for Women Pulwama, and advocates from TLSA Awantipora.
The event served as a platform for fostering awareness, advocating for women’s rights, and promoting gender equality, aligning with the spirit of International Women’s Week.
