Insights from an exemplary civil servant: A conversation with Mr Waseem Ramzan

Must read

In the tranquil valley of Nubra, nestled amidst the majestic Himalayas, lies the abode of Mr Waseem Ramzan, a distinguished KAS officer from Ganderbal Kashmir currently serving as an SDM. Recently, I had the privilege of engaging in a conversation with this humble and down-to-earth bureaucrat, whose insights left an indelible mark on my conscience.
From the onset, it was evident that Waseem Sahab embodies humility and warmth. Despite his esteemed position, he emphasized the importance of eschewing any sense of superiority. “I am an officer in my office,” he remarked, “but I never forget that my subordinates are not my servants; they are my colleagues.” His emphasis on equality and camaraderie reminded me that titles shouldn’t define how we treat others.
During our dialogue, Mr. Waseem Sahab shared a poignant reflection that transcended the confines of bureaucratic corridors. “Having all the comforts provided by the government, from transportation to accommodation, I often ponder: Do I truly possess the contentment of the heart? Do I lead a life imbued with tranquillity?” These introspective questions underscored his quest for a ‘sakoon wali zindagi’ – a life suffused with inner peace and fulfillment.
In a society often fixated on material wealth and status, Waseem Sahab’s humility serves as a poignant reminder of the essence of true satisfaction. He evoked the image of an ordinary employee with a modest salary, yet adorned with the tranquillity of the soul, juxtaposing it against his own circumstances. “Is the orderly employee with a meagre salary but inner peace not richer than me?” he mused, challenging conventional notions of success and fulfillment.
In a world marked by ambition and relentless pursuit of advancement, the wisdom imparted by Waseem Sahab serves as a beacon of light, guiding us towards a more profound understanding of success and contentment. His humility, empathy, and unwavering commitment to serving not as a superior, but as an equal among colleagues, embody the essence of exemplary leadership.
In addition to his professional competence, Waseem Sahab’s personal qualities have left a lasting impression on those he interacts with. Despite only a few meetings, he exuded warmth and treated me as a younger brother. His genuine concern for others is unparalleled; I have yet to encounter such kindness elsewhere. A defining moment was when I faced a transfer to another district. Waseem Sahab not only accompanied me but ensured my comfort and stability in the new environment. His reassuring smile spoke volumes, affirming his status as a true gentleman and remarkable individual.
As I said goodbye to Waseem Sahab, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for our conversation. In just a short time, he had shown me the power of humility and the importance of finding contentment in life’s simple pleasures. His gentle demeanour and profound insights left me inspired, reminding me that true greatness lies not in what we have, but in who we are and how we treat others.
