Panic grips Hajin residents as River Jhelum embankment collapses

BANDIPORA: Fear engulfed residents of Hajin town in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district as the embankment of the River Jhelum collapsed on Sunday after developing cracks.
The panicked inhabitants demanded immediate attention from the authorities to commence repairs on a war footing basis to bring them relief.
Speaking to Kashmir Reader, locals blamed authorities for failing to prevent rampant sand extraction from the River Jhelum over the past several years, which they believe contributed to the collapse of the embankment.
The Chairman of the Auqaf Committee, in conversation with Kashmir Reader, urged authorities to prioritize the renovation work of the collapsed wall.
It’s worth mentioning that a large portion of the River Jhelum’s wall collapsed in Hajin last year.
Tehsildar Hajin, Amandeep Singh, assured that he would look into the matter.
The Executive Engineer of Irrigation and Flood Control, speaking to Kashmir Reader, stated that renovation work would commence tomorrow, alleviating concerns of the residents. He clarified that the collapse was a result of natural landslide and not related to sand extraction.
