Drive against illegal sand mining in Pampore, Awantipora, Kakapora; several ramps destroyed: Officials

PAMPORE: The Geology and Mining Department, along with the Flood Control Department, conducted a crackdown on illegal sand mining in Pampore, Awantipora, and Kakapora areas of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district. The operation aimed to dismantle illegal ramps constructed along the Jhelum river to facilitate the movement of trucks and heavy machinery involved in illegal sand extraction.
Geology and Mining Officer Ishtiyaq Ahmad Shah informed Kashmir Reader that joint raids were carried out by officials of the Geology and Mining Department Pulwama and the Flood Control Department following numerous complaints from local residents regarding unauthorized sand extraction in these areas, which also led to damage to the Jehlium bunds.
The raids covered several areas of the district, including Pampore, Samboora, Karnanal, Jawbehara, Barsoo, Awantipora, Kakapora, and other areas of Pulwama district.
During the extensive operation, numerous ramps used by sand diggers for illegal sand extraction were destroyed by the joint team, as reported to Kashmir Reader.
Officials have issued warnings to illegal miners, urging them to refrain from engaging in such illicit activities, as stern action will be taken against them.
District Mineral Officer (DMO) Pulwama, Er Mohammad Manzoor, informed Kashmir Reader that the Deputy Commissioner Pulwama has directed to put a stop to illegal mining activities, and they are committed to ensuring compliance.
A joint operation with the Flood Control Department was conducted against illegal sand mining in Pampore, Kakapora, and Awantipora areas. During this operation, various access routes to the Jhelum river utilized by illegal miners were severed, as they were causing harm to the Jhelum bunds.
He emphasized that his team is on high alert to monitor illegal mining activities in the district. All instances of illegal mining will be addressed according to the regulations, and swift action will be taken against violators through a fast-track system.
Manzoor’s message to all illegal miners is clear: refrain from engaging in unlawful activities, or face severe consequences.
