Srinagar: The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCC&I) said it has been closely monitoring the unprecedented and erratic power supply in the Kashmir valley over the past several months, severely impacting industries, trade, businesses, and households.
The Chamber in a statement expressed deep concern and disappointment regarding the unreliable and contradictory policies of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) in maintaining regular power supply.
“It is disconcerting that despite the department’s commitment to providing uninterrupted flawless electricity after the installation of smart meters, the ground reality tells a different story. Power supply has been consistently erratic, contradicting the promises made to consumers. KPDCL’s failure to adhere to the announced schedule has further compounded the difficulties faced by various consumers. The department’s lack of action and apparent reliance on false propaganda has left consumers frustrated and dissatisfied,” it said.
Several weeks ago, KPDCL announced plans to procure power from Uttar Pradesh and negotiate for more from the central grid to address the power shortage, the Chamber said. Unfortunately, no progress has been made, and the department even implemented power curtailment before winter, a period when demand is relatively lower, it added.
“In light of these issues, the KCC&I urgently requests Lt. Governor Saheb to personally intervene and direct concerned officials to ensure consistent power supply, particularly for industries, the tourism sector, industrial estates, convenience stores, shopkeepers, traders, senior citizens, patients, students, and educational institutions. Regular power supply is crucial, especially during the punishing cold winters, to alleviate the hardships faced by the citizens,” the statement said.
The KCC&I said it is essential to note that the government invests significant funds in tourism promotion, attracting a substantial number of tourists who contribute significantly to the economy. The current power crisis not only inconveniences tourists but also tarnishes our tourism industry’s reputation, it said.
The KCC&I has urged KPDCL to demonstrate responsibility towards the beleaguered population, recognizing the critical role consistent power supply plays in the region’s overall development. “Immediate and effective measures are needed to address this pressing issue and ensure a reliable power supply for all,” it said.
