Two-day seminar-cum-alumni meet concludes at KU’s Mathematics dept

Srinagar: To bring together past and present members fostering a sense of community and a shared commitment to advancing mathematics education in the Kashmir region, the Department of Mathematics, Kashmir University (KU) Thursday held a valedictory function concluding its 2-day Seminar-cum-Alumni Meet 2023 at EMRC auditorium.
The final day of the event witnessed speeches on the significance of mathematics, poetry recitations and a captivating skit aimed at dispelling the fear of mathematics among secondary school students.
The students of the department took the centre stage showcasing their talents and highlighting the essential role of mathematics in today’s world.
A thought-provoking group discussion on the theme, “Current Scenario of Mathematics Education in Kashmir Division: Challenges and Remedies” was also held during the function.
A panel of experts, including the Head of Department (HoD), Mathematics, Prof Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday; former HoD, Prof S Pirzada; HoD, Mathematics, Central University of Kashmir, Prof Wali Mohmad Shah; Former Dean Academics, KU, Prof MA Sofi; Prof Niyaz Ahmad Sheikh from NIT (National Institute of Technology), Srinagar; Director, JKIMS (Jammu and Kashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences), Prof Tariq A Shikari and Senior lecturer Gulzar A Dar from School Education-SCERT delved into the topic and proposed recommendations to address issues in student enrollment at the secondary and college levels.
The event also featured a unique and touching felicitation ceremony for superannuated colleagues, a first in the department’s history. The contributions and services of teachers who had retired over the last 20 years were acknowledged and celebrated.
In his valedictory speech, Dean Academic Affairs, Kashmir University, Prof Farooq Ahmad Masoodi underscored the importance of organising such programmes and commended the department for its proactive role in honouring retired colleagues, discussing the current state of the education system and involving alumni to provide valuable insights for the betterment of the department.
Sharing his personal journey, the Guest of Honour, Mushtaq Ahmad Lone, KAS (alumnus) and current SDM, Zainapora, Shopian emphasised the pivotal role of mathematics in his achievements.
Prof Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday presented a comprehensive report on each superannuated faculty member before their felicitation.
Alumni from various organisations, universities, colleges, civil administration, Jammu and Kashmir Bank and schools enthusiastically participated in the event, sharing valuable feedback and cherished memories associated with the department.
Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics and organising Secretary, Dr M Abdulla Mir provided a detailed report of the seminar while Co-Organising Secretary, Dr M Saleem Lone conducted the proceedings of the event.
