New Delhi: Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Harbhajan Singh have given thumbs up to the new ‘Impact Player Rule’ introduced by the BCCI in the IPL.
The legendary cricketers reckon that the teams might need some time to understand and implement the rule according to the playing conditions.
“You need some time to understand new rules and acclimatise with new playing conditions. The same will be the case with all ten teams in the TATA IPL 2023. They will need some time to ace it,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
For the first time in IPL’s history, teams this season will be allowed to make a tactical substitution with an Impact Player coming in to bat or bowl as needed.
Veteran off-spinner, Harbhajan Singh, too, looks convinced with the inception of this new rule and has hailed the think tank for the innovative idea.
“It’s a very innovative move as you can now replace a player whom you feel is not suitable or has served his purpose with someone who can make an impact in the current playing conditions. So, kudos to the BCCI, it’s a very good rule,” said Harbhajan.
Meanwhile, Chennai’s Tushar Deshpande became the first Impact Player when he came in for Ambati Rayudu during their defence in the IPL 2023 opener between CSK and GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
While Gujarat’s Sai Sudharsan replaced New Zealand’s Kane Williamson and batted at no. 3 after he injured his knee while fielding.
