Experts highlight importance of medicinal plants, their potential as livelihood option

AWANTIPORA: Krishi Vigyan Kendra/Extension Training Centre Malangpora Pulwama, SKUAST-Kashmir on Wednesday inaugurated a one-week Entrepreneurship Skill Development Programme for Cultivation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) at KVK/ETC Malangpora Training Hall. The programme is supported and sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Science Technology and Innovation Council.
The main objective of the programme is to train and encourage the farmers who are directly or indirectly involved in this enterprise for making them entrepreneurs and generate income as well as livelihood security. The programme was inaugurated by Director Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof. Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi in virtual mode, KVK official Dr Sujhat told Kashmir Reader.
Twenty-five farmers from different areas of the District registered for the programme which was attended by Dr. Javaid Ahmad Mugloo, Prof. and Head, KVK/ETC Malangpora, Dr. Mian Shahid Rasool, Nodal Scientist, Floriculture Mission, CSRI, IIIM Srinagar, Mohammad Munaf Bhat, District Agriculture officer (Inputs) Pulwama, Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah, District Agriculture officer (Extension ) Pulwama, Scientists and students of the Kendra. Dr Imtiyaz Ahmad Zargar, Scientist, FST welcomed the participants and gave a brief account of the training programme.
Dr Javaid Ahmad Mugloo, Prof. and Head highlighted the importance of medicinal plants of Kashmir Himalayas and their potential as a livelihood option, especially in present times when we are facing a lot of unemployment issues. He also thanked the Jammu and Kashmir Science Technology and Innovation Council and Directorate of Extension, SKUAST-Kashmir for financial support.
Dr. Mian Shahid gave a detailed presentation on “Entrepreneurial opportunities for taking up MAPs as a business venture” to the participants.
The session was coordinated by Dr. Gowher Nabi Parrey who is also the organising Secretary of the programme. The participating farmers have appreciated these initiatives of the KVK/ETC Malangpora.
Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Ganie, a scientist in Animal Science, who is also the Training Coordinator, presented a formal vote of thanks.
