AS College’s Cyber Jagrukta committee holds lecture on ‘Emerging Trends in Cyber crime’

Srinagar: Cyber Jagrukta committee Amar Singh College Srinagar on Thursday organised an extension Lecture in which faculty and students of different departments participated.
The Extension Lecture was based on the theme “Emerging Trends in Cyber crime” and the resource person for the event was Mussadiq Majeed Basu, DySP, CICE.
The inaugural session was attended by Principal, Amar Singh College Prof Bashir Ahmed Rather, faculty members of the institution and the students.
Head of Department of computer science Prof Gurdeep Singh Sodhi who besides welcoming the guest introduced the topic.
He said that the tremendous increase in cyber crime is due to inadequate softwares, expired security tools, easily availability of hacking tools and lack of awareness among the public.
Principal Amar Singh College Prof Bashir Ahmed Rather traced the genesis of crimes at pan global level and talked about the strategies and tactics employed by different ruling regimes to tackle crimes.
He drew a corollary of crime and development and how one affects other phenomenally and how nations have made various laws to combat it.
He threw light on cyber crimes, cyber hygiene and other ancillary issues.
Mussadiq Majeed Basu, resource person for the event talked at length about a multitude of cyber crimes.
He gave a basic understanding of common cyber crimes like phishing, website spoofing, ransomware, malware, hacking etc.
Musadiq also delineated the legal redressal mechanism available to the victims under different sections of IT Act and guided the audience about the modus operandi to approach the law enforcement agencies in case cyber criminals get success in attacking a gullible person.
In order to make the presentation more lucid and gripping few case studies pertaining to financial frauds, cyber impersonation, data theft, sextortion were discussed at length to outline the broader contours of such crimes and the legal recourse available to the victims.
He talked about digital media ethics and information technology rules (intermediary guidelines) to make the audience aware of the institutional support system available to both the state structures and the society at large to safeguard their privacy and make their digital landscape presence healthy and safe.
The event was moderated by Dr Shumaila, Department of Sociology, technical support was provided by Prof Arshad Ahmed Bhat and Prof Ovais Shafi from department of computer science.
The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr Arshad Ahmed Yatoo (Department of Computer science) and the cordinators of the programme were Dr Shabnam Ara (Head, Department of Sociology) and Dr Syed Binish Gillani from Department of Geography.
