SRINAGAR: Krishi Vigyan Kendra Srinagar SKUAST-Kashmir on Tuesday conducted a day long Mega outreach Programme on “Scientific Rearing of Backyard Poultry” at KVK Srinagar Campus. More than 60 farmers from different areas of Tengpora Noorbagh; Nadergund and Peerbagh participated in the programme. Food and nutritional security, livelihood opportunities and sustainable farming related to
backyard poultry besides care and management of chicks were discussed during the event.
Prof. Dil Mohammad Makhdoomi, Director Extension SKUAST-K Shalimar, who was the chief guest of the function while addressing to the gathering emphasized on the entrepreneurship opportunities
in poultry rearing and importance of formation of FPO’s and cooperatives for better marketing. He also interacted with the farmers and answer their queries satisfactorily. Dr. Sajad Mohiuddin, Head of the Kendra stressed up on adopting modern techniques in poultry farming for profitability and sustainability of the enterprise. Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Ganie, Scientist -Animal Science, KVK Srinagar gave a detailed presentation on scientific rearing, feeding and management of backyard poultry farming. At the event 50 units of Backyard poultry (RIR and KCL) were distributed free of cost among the participating farmers. The peri-urban farmers praised the KVK initiatives and assured adequate care and management of these birds. They also promised horizontal expansion of this remunerative enterprise and desired frequent expert visits and venture specific exposure visit. Literature on rearing of Backyard poultry was also distributed among the beneficiaries. Other experts who attended the programme included Dr. Uzma Bashir, Dr. Rayees Ah. Wani, Dr. Aasima Rafiq, Mr. Mohd Ashraf Mir & Jalal u din Peer. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Uzma Bashir.
