SRINGAR: National Statistics Day was celebrated on June 29th, 2022 on the eve of the birth anniversary of eminent statistician of the country late Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis at Faculty of Agriculture Wadura SKUAST-K. Every year, Statistics Day is celebrated with a theme of contemporary national importance. The theme of Statistics Day, 2022 is “Data for Sustainable Development”. The objective of this Day is to create public awareness, especially in the younger generation for drawing inspiration from Professor (late) Mahalanobis about the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. The event was organized by the Division of Agri. Statistics and Economics, Faculty of Agriculture under the ICAR-World Bank funded National Agricultural Higher Education Project (NAHEP) SKUAST-K. Prof M.A.A. Siddique officiating Vice Chancellor mentioned that statistics has many practical applications in everyday life. He stated that statistical tools help the researchers in the areas of data acquisition, analysis, interpretation and presentation. He also emphasized that statistics play a vital role in different fields especially in agriculture. A compendium on “Statistics-The Sole of Data Science” was released by the Vice Chancellor on the occasion. Prof Raihana H. Kant Dean FoA expressed her gratitude to Vice Chancellor and other guests for gracing the occasion. Various imminent dignitaries DDG NSSO Haji Altaf Hussain (ISS), Prof Rajinder Prasad Director, IASRI New Delhi, Prof. Parmil Kumar HoD Statistics Jammu University, Prof. Manish Sharma HoD Statistics SKUAST-Jammu graced the occasion in virtual mode. Prof Azmat Alam Associate Director Research and OSD to Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. Khurshid A. Mir Controller and I/c Registrar Cluster University Kashmir along with Prof. Aijaz A. Haqaq Joint Secretary J&K Board of School Education were special guests and they deliberated on the importance of statistics in academic arena. Prof. Shakeel A. Mir highlighted the role of statistics across different disciplines. Dr. Faheem Jeelani gave a power point presentation on the immense contribution of Prof. Mahalanobius in the field of statistics. The programme was attended by heads of various divisions, faculty members and more than 50 UG/PG students of the faculty. Prof. Tariq A.
