Maharashtra crisis: SC extends time for rebels to respond till July 11

NEW DELHI: The SC hearing a plea by rebel Shiv Sena legislators against their disqualification notice issued by the Maharashtra deputy speaker, has extended the time for filing response till July 11 evening. Originally, the rebels were advised to file a reply by 5.30pm today.
Hearing the plea, SC has issued notices to Maharashtra government and deputy speaker, Secretary of Maharashtra State Legislative Assembly, Centre, Shiv Sena leaders Ajay Chaudhary, Sunil Prabhu and asked them to file a reply within five days. Supreme Court to hear the case next on July 11. The Court also directed the State government to ensure that no harm is caused to the life and property of 39 rebel MLAs.
A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B Pardiwala heard the case on Monday. The rebel group led by Eknath Shinde approached the apex court against the disqualification order issued by the deputy speaker against 16 rebel legislators, including Shinde. The rebels argued that the deputy speaker is not competent to take decision on the matter while he himself is facing a removal motion.
