Teachers’ delegation meets secretary school education

Demand departmental examinations for promotions

Srinagar: A delegation of General Line Teachers of School Education Department met Commissioner Secretary School Education Department, B K Singh at his office chamber in Srinagar on Tuesday.
The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum to Singh requesting for introduction of Departmental Examinations for promotions in the School Education Department in Jammu and Kashmir.
Stressing on the accountability and competition, the delegation demanded that there should be performance-based promotions in the department for rational utilization of teaching staff in educational institutions.
“There is a dire need of competition and performance assessments to push forward merit-holders, skilled and talented human resources in the department. We demand that a small quota of promotions for both- Gazetted and Non-Gazette- be carried through departmental examinations to infuse new blood in the functioning of the department,” they said.
Citing different departments, they said that this system currently exists in various central and state departments and autonomous institutions across the country, including in Mizoram, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Department of Telecommunications, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) where departmental examinations are conducted to promote employees to next higher post based on the performance in the examinations.
Secretary Education gave patient hearing to the issue raised by the group. The teachers’ delegation thanked him and hoped that the issue will be looked into and given due consideration.
