KU VC inaugurates lecture series on health awareness

Globally-acclaimed gastroenterologist Dr M S Khuroo delivers first lecture on Biomedical Research

Srinagar: Vice-Chancellor University of Kashmir Prof Talat Ahmad on Monday inaugurated a lecture series on health awareness.
The series has been organised by the University Health Centre under the direct supervision and mentorship of Prof Talat to raise awareness on some pressing health concerns in Jammu and Kashmir. It includes 12 lectures to be delivered in the next four months.
In his presidential address, Prof Talat said the lecture series will enhance the university’s linkage with the society and help raise awareness on key health issues among the masses.
“A university’s role runs beyond academics and research. It is our mandate and responsibility to reach out to the society and see how we can help sensitise people on critical social, health and environmental issues,” he said, adding that the current lecture series is a serious endeavour in that direction.
He congratulated the University Health Centre for organising the programme.
Globally-acclaimed gastroenterologist and top-notch scientist Prof M S Khuroo, who is credited with having taken medical science from Kashmir on the global map with his discovery of Hepatitis-E, delivered the first lecture of the series on ‘Biomedical Research’. He said it is important to have an acute vision to unravel hidden secrets of nature or problems which cause suffering, disease and death.
“There must be passion to uncover the truth at the costs which are heavy and painful,” he said in an exhaustive power-point presentation, which also dwelt in detail into the discovery of Hepatitis-E despite several challenges and hurdles.
Joint Registrar and In-charge University Health Centre Dr Ashfaq A Zarri, chief organiser of the lecture series, said renowned doctors will deliver their talks on pressing health concerns including diabetes, sudden heart attacks, infectious diseases, public health concerns and COVID19.
KU Registrar Dr Nisar A Mir, Dean Academics Prof Farooq A Masoodi, Controller of Examinations Prof Irshad A Nawchoo, Dean Students Welfare Prof Raies A Qadri, Dean School of Earth Sciences Prof Shamim A Shah and Chief Librarian Prof Irshad A Shah joined the inaugural session, which was also attended by faculty members and non-teaching staff of the University, apart from staff of the University Health Centre. Dr Saima Farhad conducted proceedings of the inaugural ceremony and Dr Suraiyah delivered a vote of thanks.
