Kupwara residents protest against water, power shortage

KUPWARA: The residents of Malik Pora Villages of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district staged a protest against the shortage of power and water supply in their area.
Locals of Malik Pora village of Kupwara took into the streets on Tuesday and staged a protest demonstration against the department of power development (PDD) and Jal Shakti departments.
The protesting people including men and women shouting slogans against the departments blamed that their area is facing acute shortage of power supply from the past several months and now the inhabitants are facing shortage of water supply in their area. They said that people are being forced to use the drinking water from nearby streams which they are not able to use due to high contamination.
Protesters blocked the Kupwara-Vilgam road for some time due to which traffic movement was halted. Later a team of police reached the spot and assured protesting people that they will forward their demands to concerned departments and government so that they will find a solution. The protesters later called off their protest but threatened that if their problems could not be solved they would again hit the roads and concerned departments will be responsible.
Meanwhile, an officer of the district administration said that they will look into the matter and if needed they will provide water to the people through tankers and their electricity problem will be solved within a few days.
