International Day against Drug Abuse: KU’s Social Work Department organises webinar

Srinagar: The Department of Social Work, University of Kashmir, on Saturday organised a webinar to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
KU Registrar Dr Nisar A Mir inaugurated the webinar, which was organised to educate people on combating misinformation and promote sharing of facts on drugs, including health risks and solutions to tackle the drug menace at local level.
In his presidential address, Dr Mir called for joint efforts to prevent drug abuse.
“There is a need to create a dedicated human resource for preventive and rehabilitative services in Kashmir,” he said, highlighting various initiatives taken by the University of Kashmir in this regard recently.
He said educational institutions should come forward to raise awareness on harmful effects of drug abuse.
The theme of the day-long webinar was: ‘share facts on drugs, save lives’.
In his presentation, Prof Geer Mohammad Ishaq from KU’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, emphasised the need to adhere to Drug De-Addiction Policy while creating necessary infrastructure to deal with the problem of drug addiction.
Coordinator, Department of Social Work, Dr Aadil Bashir highlighted the key aims and objectives of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Dr Majid Shafi, Consultant Psychiatrist, District Hospital Pulwama presented a brief about the drug addiction scenario in Kashmir. He also shared the research work conducted in the area of drug addiction over the years and the challenges ahead.
Dr. Jayant Mahadevan, Assistant Professor, Center for Addiction Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, Bangalore talked at length on “understanding vulnerability to substance abuse disorders”.
