Srinagar-Leh highway opens for light vehicles

Ganderbal: The strategic Srinagar-Leh highway was opened for traffic on Tuesday after a nearly five-month winter break, official said.
He said only light motor vehicles are allowed to ply on the highway at the first instance.
They said the highway was opened to traffic after the BRO, which maintains the strategic road links and highways, cleared away the heavy snow accumulated on the road to make it traffic worthy.
Officials said snow clearance operation along the road had got delayed due to fresh snowfall in March and April.
The highway acts as lifeline to Ladakh region which remains snowbound for most of the time due to accumulation of snow on Zojila pass that connects the area with the Kashmir Valley.
The central government has already approved a tunnel at Zojila to make the highway an all-weather road so that Ladakh region remains connected with Kashmir throughout the year.
